1. Harvard Square
Go visit the world-famous Harvard University. You can stroll around Harvard Yard to see the brick facade of college dorms and college buildings. Take a photo with John Harvard’s bronze statue. Then treat your kids to ice cream at J.P. Licks. Sit at the outdoor seating and people-watch. Check out the street performers. You can also buy Harvard University souvenirs from Harvard Coop. Harvard Square is a lot of fun and always bustling with activities. The best part is it’s completely free!
2. Charlestown Navy Yard
Go on a free tour of Charlestown Navy Yard and its warships. Head over to Charlestown Navy Yard which is on the Freedom Trail. Start at the Navy Yard Visitor Center then you can go on a free tour of the U.S.S. Constitution. Tours run every half hour. Be prepared for the long lines, and bring snacks and water for the kids while you wait for your tour. Also, know that the U.S.S. Constitution is closed on Mondays, check the Charlestown Navy Yard website before you go.
3. Faneuil Hall
Faneuil Hall is a great place to take the kids. The best part is it’s free! You can go on a free tour of Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. After your tour, grab lunch at Faneuil Hall’s Quincy Market. Quincy Market is New England’s largest food hall. There are lots of kid-friendly food options at Quincy Market from pizza to pasta to ice cream. After lunch, go watch the street performers. Faneuil Hall has a rotating line-up of street performers so there will always be a show whenever you to Faneuil Hall. Or you can go shopping, there are over 100 retail shops at Faneuil Hall.
4. The Greenway
Take the kids to burn off energy at The Greenway. The Greenway is a park located in the heart of Boston. It even cuts through parts of the Freedom Trail so you can take a break from the trail at the Greenway. There is always something going on at The Greenway- get a snack or lunch from the Food Trucks or treat your kids to a carousel ride at The Greenway. And in the summer, there are fountains for your kids to run around in. The best part about going to The Greenway is it’s free!
5. Freedom Trail
Go on a self-guided tour of Boston’s Freedom Trail. It’s easy to tour the Freedom Trail on your own. You don’t have to pay for a tour guide. Going on a self-guided tour of the Freedom Trail is easy because you literally just follow the red line (or red brick) on the sidewalk. The Freedom Trail is 2.5 miles long. Just follow along and it will lead you to Boston’s historical sights. There are 16 sights along the way and almost all of the attractions have free admissions. You can spend all day on the Freedom Trail or spend an hour touring the Freedom Trail. It’s up to you!
